Of delightful diminutive proportions and with panelled ends bold “D” mouldings dividing the drawers, this early transitional chest retains some features from the William and Mary Period. Made in solid well yew wood to the top and sides and with thick hand cut yew wood veneers to the drawer fronts, it is inlaid with decorative solid boxwood stringing and is a very fine and decorative example of the period. The top is wonderfully inlaid with circles of boxwood stringing and is boldly banded in boxwood and has stylized heart inlaid corners. The carcass is constructed from pine and both the yew and boxwood have developed a wonderful rich honey colour and lustrous patina. There is evidence of age and use throughout, but it is generally in fine overall original condition and is a rare survival.
