This was Tom Simpson’s 1962 team, and the one he said backed him to the hilt. He turned pro at the end of 1959 and raced for two and a half years with St Raphael, but although the team wanted to keep him when his contract expired at the end of 1961, Jacques Anquetil was joining and Simpson wanted to race against him not for him in the Tour de France.

It was a good move, despite still being relatively inexperienced at the age of 24 Simpson finished 6^thoverall in the 1962 Tour. And on stage 12 at the height of the race in the Pyrenees, he became the first British cyclist ever to wear the yellow jersey of race leadership.

His final overall position could have been higher than sixth as well. He was lying 3rd overall on the final mountain stage, but a crash and subsequent broken fingers dropped him down the standings.
