Transitional Navajo Rug.  All natural native Churro wool  had been hand-sheared, hand-carded, and hand-spun. The many "lazy" or sectional lines add a visual movement to the variegated gray/brown background. 
This was one of Steve's favorite Navajo Textiles, from his private collection.  He so appreciated the carding and spinning talents of the weavers and then to have them used in such a beautiful design.  The first rug in a rug!  4 saddle blankets inside of a larger Navajo Rug!  Very good condition for a 150 year old Navajo Rug!!

At this age it could have been anywhere and used for anything: For example by the US Cavalry for a door cover to a Portal at a Fort.  There is a thinning area at one end that may be evidence of such a use.
