The PROTON 5 is a proton magnetometer of the fifth generation developed by JW Fishers. It is a maritime magnetic detecting device operated by a microprocessor with superior performance. The definitive iron and steel detector, the Proton 5. Its maximum range capabilities of 1,500 feet (450 meters) on each side (3,000 feet total swath) enables you to scan a large area rapidly and thoroughly. The mag is also a suitable choice for identifying smaller objects such as pipelines, anchors, cables, cannons, dredge heads, etc. It is particularly beneficial when things are buried and cannot be located using sonar or video search technologies.

The medium between the magnetometer and the metal target has no effect on the detecting range. There is no difference in performance when detecting through air, water, silt, sand, or solid coral. This magnetometer is perfect for both commercial operations and expert wreck searchers due to its vast detecting area.

With a sensitivity of 1 nT, it has the highest practicable sensitivity for a towed proton precession magnetometer. A two-second cycle time provides a robust return signal and is quick enough to identify even tiny iron/steel objects. The PROTON 5's triaxial noise-canceling sensor enables omnidirectional towing with no heading inaccuracy or dead zone. The device is completely digital and displays the current five-digit measurement on a 6-inch LCD screen that is lighted for nighttime use. On the LCD, up to eighty of the past measurements are presented visually in a history plot. The optional altimeter displays the distance from the bottom of the towfish. From the top-side control box, user-friendly menus enable straightforward setup of all operating parameters and system optimization. A customizable audible alarm allows the operator to determine how much of a deviation from the baseline measurement will trigger the alert.

At speeds of up to 10 knots, the towfish possesses exceptional hydrodynamic properties, allowing it to glide through the water with ease. The Fish may be towed at nearly any pace, albeit it should be hauled slowly when locating small objects or while dragging it deep. Small targets should be towed at a pace of 1-2 knots. With the optional UA-3 Altimeter, it is possible to keep an exact distance from the ground. The Fish is dragged in deep water behind the optional DDW-1 Deep Dive Wing depressor. The PROTON 5 towfish conveniently fits into a waterproof Pelican® case when collapsed. Modular architecture enables for simple field maintenance, should it ever be required.

Package Includes

The basic system consists of a 200-foot-rated towfish, 150 feet of Kevlar-reinforced tow line, and a control box on the surface. Optional USB data output and Tracker 3 software allow the mag reading to be shown together with GPS location information on a laptop computer. On the computer, the target position is shown and recorded. In lieu of a separate laptop computer, an optional Microsoft Surface ® tablet can be installed in the control box lid, resulting in a more streamlined product.
