Highly Rated Wagner: Der Ring Des Nibelungen - Varnay, Hotter, Nilsson, Aldenhoff, Windgassen, Vinay, Grümmer, Greindl; Knappertsbusch, 1957 With Warranty [wIDJbqLe]
Description:
Hans Knappertsbusch was a conductor who thrived in the theatrical setting. While his studio recordings offer only a glimpse of his approach, they cannot replicate the immersive experience he achieved in the opera house. In this performance, he is supported by one of the great orchestras in operatic history—every gesture from the strings is rendered with such clarity that one could almost take melodic dictation from it.
Astrid Varnay takes on all three Brünnhildes, navigating the distinct vocal demands of each with precision and commanding vocal presence. The role of Siegfried is split between Bernd Aldenhoff and Wolfgang Windgassen. While dividing the role can sometimes disrupt continuity, both tenors bring a shared lyrical sensibility that maintains a sense of cohesion. Ludwig Suthaus, himself a renowned Siegfried, elevates the role of Loge with insight and vocal strength.
Hans Hotter has occasional vocal inconsistencies, but these are overshadowed by his deep understanding of Wotan’s complexity and moral ambiguity. A young Birgit Nilsson shines as Sieglinde—her performance is so compelling that it’s a pity she returned to the role only rarely after becoming so closely associated with Brünnhilde. Ramón Vinay adds further strength to the cast as Siegmund, his baritonal tenor ideally suited to the role. Elisabeth Grümmer nearly steals the spotlight in her appearances as both Freia and Gutrune.
