Antique sheet music hand-painted on vellum. This was likely produced as liturgy music. In Latin. The song includes part of Matthew 28. This sheet shows its age with some stains, slight wrinkling, and some waviness. At some point a section at bottom was either damaged or intentionally removed and a patch of vellum was sewn in its place. Both sides feature colorful letters in red and blue. Antique sheet music is difficult to date. By the 14th century, the five-line staff was the norm, especially for vocal and instrumental music. French monks are known to have begun creating their own paper around 1350 C.E. Sheet music that is printed would have been created after the printing press was invented in Europe (1453 C.E.) and is therefore believed to have been made in the early Renaissance. These generalizations help give us an idea of possible age, but we cannot know if a piece was created in an area that adopted new techniques early or clung to past methods later. Experts believe music such as this on vellum could have been produced as late as 1700. Good to very good condition overall. Sheet measures approx. 21 x 15.75 inches (H x W) overall.
