Antique map of the Maine and Perche area of France, from a composite atlas circa 1775. Maine is one of the traditional provinces of France. It corresponds to the former County of Maine, whose capital was also the city of Le Mans. The area is now divided into the departments of Sarthe and Mayenne. Perche is a former province of France, known historically for its forests. It was absorbed into the present-day departments of Orne and Eure-et-Loir. A composite atlas is an atlas made up of a selection of previously issued maps. This atlas appears to have been partly by Louis Charles Desnos and an atlas title page dated 1769 by Desnos was present. The full title translates to "MAP OF THE GENERAL GOVERNMENT OF MAINE ET PERCHE Dedicated and Presented to M.P.A.G.V. DE LA TOUR DU PIN MARQUIS DE LA CHARCE ET DE MÉRÉVILLE Baron de Fonvant et de la Ferte Governor and Lieutenant General for the King of his Provinces of Maine-et-Lerche and County of Laval, Governor for His Majesty of the Pillar of Mion in Dauphiné, Brigadier of his Armies, Colonel of an Infantry Regiment of his Name Knight of the Order of Louis XIV By his very humble and respectful Servant D. DE LA FOSSE Geographer. IN PARIS with the King's Privilege, 1773". This map has original hand-coloring and shows cities, towns, villages, rivers, topographic detail, etc. Includes Digny, Le Mans, Laval, and more. Good antique condition with some minor stains, toning, and some small tears at the paper edges. Measures approx. 19 x 26.75 inches to the neatline.
