This is an original 1876 black and white steel engraving that depicts the long-suffering Catherine of Braganza, Infanta of Portugal and Queen consort of King Charles II of England. As she was a devout Roman Catholic, she was not permitted to be officially coronated in the Anglican ceremony. Her husband was a persistent womanizer who acknowledged many illegitimate children over the course of their marriage. However, he would always take his wife's side in altercations and almost seemed in awe of her strong religious faith and mild temper.
